The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Sycamore Public Library call number: DVD LIF

This film, by Wes Anderson, is a favorite of mine. The cast is marvelous, headed by Bill Murray and Owen Wilson and featuring a whole host of amazing actors (Cate Blanchett, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe [touchingly hilarious], Jeff Goldblum [outstanding, as always], Michael Gambon, Bud Cort, Seu Jorge [singing David Bowie songs in Portuguese throughout], and, as "intern number one", Matthew Gray Gubler). The plot is both simple (think Moby Dick) and surprisingly complex (the nature of family, the threat and power of fame, and the mystery of love).

"What might have a self-consciously quirky comedy is deepened and humanized by its rich performances, especially from Murray, who keeps getting better and better. The director of Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums scores his most funny-sad movie to date. ****"--David Sterritt, The Christian Science Monitor

Recommended for fans of other Wes Anderson movies, like The Darjeeling Limited (reviewed here), Rushmore (reviewed here), and The Royal Tenenbaums (reviewed here).
