"To encourage original creative work in the field of books for children. To emphasize to the public that contributions to the literature for children deserve similar recognition to poetry, plays, or novels. To give those librarians, who make it their life work to serve children's reading interests, an opportunity to encourage good writing in this field."

Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award
An award given to the author of the book voted most outstanding by students in grades four through eight in participating Illinois schools.
2011 Nominees
Illinois’ K-3 Children's Choice Award will be presented annually to the author and/or illustrator of the book voted as their favorite by students in Kindergarten through Grade Three in participating Illinois schools or public libraries.
2011 Master list
The award is designed for students in grades 3-5 who are ready for longer titles than found on the Monarch list, but not quite ready for the sophistication of some of the Rebecca Caudill titles.

The CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) Carnegie Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding book for children and young people.
The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people.
